Wellness in Home Design

At AV Architects + Builders, we deliver homes that make you feel like you are on vacation year round. But what does that mean? For us, “vacation” means a respite from stress – a chance for rest and relaxation. Our lives are busy and draining, so we believe it is important to have a home that rejuvenates and energizes. We undertake every aspect of our home design and building process to deliver a sanctuary to our clients so that they can tend to their health just by living there.

Take your health seriously.

It is estimated that 43% of adults suffer health conditions related to stress. In addition to mental health, heart, blood pressure and other critical parts of our bodies are impacted by stress. So, we need to turn our attention to reducing stress in our lives. We spoke with Callan Lichtenauer, Doctor of Chiropractic at Empower Nova, about how to reduce stress. She recommends beginning and ending each day with a focus on health. In the morning, a routine to get the day started right should include hydration, movement and getting outside, and you should consider some mindful exercises like journaling and conscious gratitude. At night, turn off the devices an hour or two before going to sleep, practice sleep hygiene by having a bedroom dedicated solely to sleep and avoid those blue lights.

A good home design will help reduce stress in numerous ways. By creating bedrooms with walk-in closets for changing, and dedicating space elsewhere in the house to work, the bedroom is a place for sleeping peacefully. A fundamental focus on indoor-outdoor living also encourages moving around and getting fresh air. This means paying attention to the placement of the doors and windows, designing covered decks and porches adjacent to the kitchen for outdoor dining, including walk-out lower levels, and orienting the home to enhance privacy and the views.

Wellness starts at home

We’ve previously talked about our healthy homes, and health is such an important part of a home environment. An open concept for the family living area encourages togetherness close to a well-designed kitchen brings the family together to prepare meals that follow a healthy diet. We make a point to have light throughout the house and dedicated space to exercise. Our clients look for this blend of connectivity and dedicated space:

I believe every part of a home should serve a purpose. I spend 12-14 hours of my life working from home so making this space as ergonomic and productive as possible is important. It is also important that this place provide an atmosphere that provides relaxation and recreation opportunities where possible. An efficient lifestyle is my biggest priority.

Dr. Lichtenauer is a big proponent of ergonomic living. She strongly encourages all computer users to make sure that their monitor is eye level to keep from tensing and bunching at the shoulders. She suggests keeping an eye on teens and their phones, encouraging them to stretch and move around from being bent over the small screen all day. She also recommends that smaller children be encouraged to use tablets and games while lying on their stomachs to promote the right neck angle.

We think a restful atmosphere can be built into the bones of the home. Modern home design features simple, smooth lines, uninterrupted by clutter, and we create discrete, accessible storage throughout the home that puts all the “stuff” out of sight for a soothing appearance. We orient the home towards optimal sunlight and include many small details to simplify life by using high performance materials and the amazing smart technology available.

Life has so many stressors that it is important to find ways to mitigate it. Your home is low-hanging fruit. Using custom design that focuses on wellness, relaxation and health is an excellent foundation for a balanced lifestyle. AV Architects + Builders wants to work with you to bring together Vacation Style Living™ and the home of your dreams. Contact us for a consultation.
