Looking Deeper into Oohs & Aahs
On May 5th and 6th, the doors to our latest spec home opened for the 2018 Parade of Homes. The turnout was great, the sun was shining and we heard a lot of oohs and aahs… but do you know what surprised us the most? How much passionate feedback we got about this modern oasis!
Everyone knows Northern Virginia is a fantastic place to live. But let’s face it, when it comes to home design – we live in a sea of colonial. We couldn’t count how many times we heard people say when they walked through the door “Finally, something MODERN!”. Or maybe “OMG THANK YOU, I swear if I had to walk through another traditional home I’d pull my hair out.”
For more than a few, our modern home design touched a nerve.
To us, this is fascinating stuff. On the one hand, we’re not really surprised. We design homes that are simply different and make you feel relaxed, calm, and renewed – like you are on vacation, every day of the year. Our clients appreciate this, as they tend to lead busy lives.
But it made us think maybe something deeper was at play. Is it possible excellent design can invite a person to look at their life (and themselves) through a different lens? We think it’s not too much of a reach to say a successful modern home design can make a person feel original, free, and in the moment. And if you think about it, these are human needs – and perhaps those unmet needs were the source of the emotional reactions we witnessed so many times.
This seemed like a great topic for a blog. How can a successful modern home design have this effect? When someone says “I like modern”, what do they really mean? Well, here is our humble attempt at answering those questions. We think our newest spec home has four features that enables the design to have a transformative effect, at least for those of us who are open to it!
1. Dramatic Space, Open Concept Design
As mentioned, our modern home designs are inspired by the feeling you had on your favorite vacation. A subtle, calming effect happens as you experience the flow between rooms – and pass the sculptural design elements that separate the spaces – like the elegant fireplace and waterfall island. Also, the large sweeping windows, high ceilings and natural light transport you to another worry-free world. California maybe? Or the south of France?
2. Declutter, Declutter, Declutter
Our modern home designs are beautiful because they are practical! Throughout the house we’ve created ways to get rid of clutter. If you can get rid of clutter, you can maintain a calming space, and this transforms how you feel every day of the year.
– Every single bedroom has its own walk-in closet and full bathroom.
– The kitchen has a walk-in pantry, a butler pantry, and lots of storage space
– A large mudroom with tons of storage helps keep the home clutter free
– Optional storage systems are available in the garage, study, etc.
3. No Maintenance
This is by far one of the most attractive things about building a new modern home with cutting edge technology. From “rainscreen technology” siding (which never has to be painted and has a lifetime hassle free warranty) to a TPO metal roof that lasts up to 50 years, you can put your DIY belt away for a long, long time. Knowing you are living in a home that is on your side – and won’t harm your pocket book – is freeing and peaceful.
4. “Smart Home”
Finally, a lot of people loved how this home’s internet, security cameras and sound system are all controlled from your phone. No cables, no ugly reminders of technology. Your mind should focus on what matters most, the beautiful space around you (and maybe the zen garden outside!).
