360 Home Living: Fire “Ribbons” For A Special Holiday Gift

A fireplace is not just about warmth any more. It's a versatile decorative accent for your home. Remodeling your fireplace with some of the following ideas in mind could give any room a completely different look.

A traditional chimney still has its charm, but design has come a long way to turn the use of fireplaces to a bold accent in homes. New trends in design allow for flexible creative ideas that let you enjoy the elements at the click of a button.

One side of this AV Architects custom home design showcases a fireplace as an entry accent. Just like a piece of art. The stone wall separates two rooms and the double glass fireplace connects them.

Transitional designs are at hand to transform your wood burning fireplace. Using fireplaces as a remodeling update to your traditional home doesn’t mean you have to drop your vision and style.

AV Architects creativity turned this unused oversized room into a family room with a more modern fireplace (...and an upstairs children room). TV is on top of the fireplace to bring all entertainment and attention into one place. Natural elements like stone, pebbles and fire play a key role in this transitional design.

A fireplace can be a decorative feature or means of a visual connection between two different rooms that can make things interesting.

The space, for starters, is no longer a limitation. A traditional fire place required many structural specifications that not necessarily apply to gas fireplaces. The firebox dimensions, for example, can be smaller. You can play with thickness and shape in the design without worrying about the broad dimensions of the traditional hearth.

With the variety of fireplaces, it's now possible to get the warmth, the view and even the smell of a natural wood fire without the environmental implications and building restrictions that a traditional chimney usually entails. Not to mention, your ash cleaning duties will disappear forever.

The picture below gives a hint of traditional brick in the back of the fireplace. I love the use of texture, while it reminds us of the traditional fireplace in a contemporary environment.

Location is another advantage offered by gas. You may choose any place in the house, because you’re no longer restricted by areas where you can build a vertical pipe to conduct the smoke and combustion gases out. Gas fire places, may require a much smaller vent where there’s a risk for fume leaks, like the bedroom, but not in other parts of the house.

New ways of looking at fireplaces open up a collection of possibilities to experience the illusion of relaxing in a paradise. Even if it’s just for a few minutes.

Like the idea of a fireplace in your bathroom? We all smile at the thought of having candles lit up while soaking in the bath tub. The warmth and the relaxing feeling offered by candles can be substituted -or complemented- by a double-sided built-in gas fire place with romantic “ribbons of fire” that separate your master bedroom and bathroom. How “inspiring” is that?

In the photo below, the glass fireplace connects the bedroom with the relaxing spa area in the bathroom. Leave it to your imagination to make it better! Project by AV Architects.

We are no longer attached to the idea of a conventional height. Creativity is welcomed here because there’s no need for wide and deep fireboxes that exhaust the flue. We find fireplaces at eye level, just as if you are looking at a framed piece of art.

Another advantage of the heat being contained is the possibility of combining entertainment features. Adding a TV above the fireplace is a design solution many families like. It is 360 home living ideas, like this one, that let people enjoy rooms to the max.

Finally, there is no limitation in the materials that surround your fireplace, which can add different textures. In the project below the use of natural materials like ledger stone in the surrounding wall, oak mantel and river stones in the hearth create a family-friendly and functional room that speaks to all your senses.
